“Le cimetière du Père-Lachaise”
Oil on Canvas Board, 24 x 18 in.; Since moving here to France, I have spent some wonderful time wandering around this massive cemetery. It is the largest cemetery in the city of Paris (44 hectares or 110 acres), although there are larger cemeteries in the city's suburbs. Père Lachaise is in the 2oth arrondissement and is notable for being the first garden cemetery, as well as the first municipal cemetery. It is also the site of three World War I memorials. The cemetery is on Boulevard de Ménilmontant. I painted this because I was moved by the sense of light and mystery, and wanted to capture it in paint. I thought a lot of Cezanne, because I admire how he simplified the very complicated trees and landscape areas in his forest and mountain side paintings.
